Entering the EFL profession can provide a unique opportunity. Some go on to make it a life long career, the vast majority stay in the EFL teaching profession for a short term whilst debts (university related are paid off, or a unique one year experience is undertaken and completed )
Before entering the profession you should consider the following issues:-
a) which country do I want to teach in?
b) what are the legal requirement to work in that country
c) what kind of school do I want to work in
d) what back up resources are available to me in that country:-
di) legal help
dii) pension and health insurance system
diii) the type of medical care available
div) the type of demands the contract will place on me
dv) the type of accommodation I will be living in
dv1) what are my options if I don't like the job
dvii) what does the contract actually say about:-
a) sick leave
b) vacation
c) actual working hours
d) pay
e) firing clauses
f) airfares
g) student requirements
h) other penalty clauses
e) what teacher organizations (TESOL, Union) are available to join
f) what information is available on Immigration laws
g) can I work a second job legally
h) are there any severance pay laws (Labor law) I need to know about
i) is there a Labor Office to help me when I have a problem
j) what is my legal obligation after signing a contract
k) how to contact my Embassy if employer holds my passport
l) can the employer sue me if I break the contract
m) which TESOL Certificate (if any) gets me a higher paying job
